I decided to boost my systemic thinking skills to expand my arsenal with more practical tools, and I started with the book *Systemic Thinking* by Donella H. Meadows. In systemic thinking, every system has a goal — and it should be set in a way that allows the system to remain flexible and adaptive. If the goal is formulated too rigidly or declaratively, the system begins to interpret it too literally. As a result, it loses the ability to adapt to environmental changes and stops functioning sustainably. But that's not what I wanted to write about. Purely out of curiosity, I asked GPT: “If I were a system, what would my goal look like?” GPT, already knowing quite a bit of context about me, responded with the following: **Goal of the “Alexander” system** The system is designed to bring clarity to complex, tangled, multi-component environments and to create structures that enable people, teams, and projects to move faster, cleaner, and with fewer losses. Alexander is a system that takes chaos as input and outputs clarity, order, and direction, allowing people and projects to move faster, more smoothly, and more safely. I read this and thought: it actually sounds pretty true. Now I just need to package this “system” into a product and start selling it 😁

Summary

This post explores the concept of systemic thinking, emphasizing the importance of setting flexible and adaptive goals within systems to ensure sustainability and resilience. The author references Donella H. Meadows' book *Systemic Thinking* to highlight how rigid goal formulation can hinder a system's ability to respond to environmental changes. To deepen understanding, the author uses GPT to conceptualize a personal system, defining its goal as bringing clarity, order, and direction to complex environments. This system, named 'Alexander,' aims to transform chaos into structured progress, enabling faster, smoother, and safer movement for teams and projects. The reflection underscores the value of systemic thinking in practical applications, including product development and organizational improvement. Overall, the post advocates for thoughtful goal-setting within systems to foster adaptability and efficiency, illustrating how AI can assist in conceptualizing and refining systemic models for real-world use.
